In my
other two articles on the degradation of American morality, I
asked the question "Where does this all stop?" Where
will society finally draw the line between what is decent and
what is not, and what can we do about all of this? I'll answer
that in a minute, but first I want to address one other thing
- the consequence of inaction.
The Bible
says in Psalm 33:12, "Blessed is the nation whose God is
the Lord." A nation that serves the Lord will be a blessed
nation because of God's covenant with those people. But it will
also be a blessed nation because people who serve the Lord obey
His Word and His statutes. And of course, people who follow God's
statutes will be blessed because God's principles are always for
our benefit and for the furthering of His Kingdom and the people
in it.
Proverbs
13:15 says that the way of a transgressor is hard. And of course
that is correct, because trangressors don't have the benefit of
reaping the rewards of good living. Every act of obedience to
God has a reward attached to it. 1 Timothy 4:8 tells us that Godliness
has value for all things and holds promises, both in the present
life and the life to come. Mark 10:29-30 tells us that no one
who has left anything for the Gospel will fail to receive a 100-fold
return on that investment in his lifetime (this present age).
Hebrews 6:10 tells us that God is not unjust, and He won't forget
what people have done for Him and His Kingdom. And most of us
will recognize the popular Hebrews 11:6, which tells us that God
is a rewarder of those that diligently seek Him.
So, what
conclusions can we draw? Simply, when you follow the Lord, you're
going to enjoy the rewards. We you follow the ways of the transgressor,
you'll have a hard way to go.
Our nation
is currently in one of the biggest financial crises in its history.
But why are we in our current dilemma? Is it not because we have
followed ungodly financial practices? This nation THRIVES on debt.
Almost everyone is in debt, and our own government has more debt
than all of us! Yet, debt is not scriptural. We have followed
an ungodly way and we are now reaping the results of it. I fear
that if America does not change its ways, her power and her voice
in the world scene will continue to decrease. And make no mistake
about it, America's power and influence ARE decreasing in the
world scene.
The nation
of Haiti is a perfect example of what happens when a nation does
not follow God. Around the time of the American revolution, Haiti
was the most economically prosperous colony in the Western Hemisphere.
In the 1750s, Haiti's economy accounted for about 50% of France's
gross national product. Haiti was at one time largely Catholic,
but in the 20th century the Catholic influence greatly backed
off from its opposition of another religion - Voodoo. Voodoo is
now the primary religion of Haiti. As Voodoo's influence grew
over the past century, so did Haiti's corruption and its poverty.
Haiti is now the ONLY fourth world country in the Western Hemisphere.
From most prosperous to least prosperous in only 200 years? That's
not a coincidence. In fact, there is only one other nation in
our hemisphere that rivals Haiti's economic status - the third
world nation of Cuba, also a godless nation. All other nations
in our hemisphere are considered to be first world or second world
nations.
So, there
are two questions that need to be answered. Where does this all
stop? and What can we do about it?
The answer
to "Where does this all stop?" is simple. It doesn't.
Human nature gets more and more wicked with the passage of time.
The more "tolerant" we get, the more desensitized we
become to the horrors of our actions and lifestyles. We give the
devil an inch, he takes a mile. That's why the Bible says to "give
NO place to the devil." But our society has given him place,
and will continue to do so. Contrary to the thoughts of some,
I highly doubt that secular society will just wake up one day
and come to itself saying, "What in the world are we doing?
Let's stop killing babies, and stop promoting the homosexual agenda,
and stop living on debt. Let's abolish pornography and filth in
our media and start promoting conservative values." No, the
Bible actually says that the hot will get hotter, and the cold
will get colder. The worse is going to get worse.
But there
is an encouraging answer to the second question, "What can
we do about it?" The answer is that we can spread the Gospel
and get people saved. Man's words of wisdom and reason don't mean
a thing to people who have determined in their hearts and minds
to follow a specific agenda. No matter how much sense you make,
you're not going to be able to convince an immoral person that
they need to change their views. But you CAN win people to Jesus
and let the Holy Spirit do that job for you. You can win people
to Jesus by appealing to the emptiness they have inside, because
they are all empty. Maybe they won't admit it yet, but deep down
they know that something is missing in their lives. That "something"
is Jesus. So win people to Jesus. You see, 1 Corinthians 2:14
tells us that unspiritual people can't understand spiritual truths.
So don't bother telling a homosexual to stop being homosexual.
Don't tell an abortion rights activist that they're wrong. Don't
try to reason with them, because spiritual truths can only be
discerned by people who have the Holy Spirit. Win people to Jesus,
and the Holy Spirit will change their views. And He can do a much
better job of it than any of us.
Christians,
let this article be a call to action. Don't fight the agendas,
because that's fighting the symptom, not the cause. Let's just
get busy winning souls for the Kingdom. That is the only thing
that has a chance of turning our country's moral degradation around.
Win people to Jesus, and you've already defeated their ungodly
agendas. Do it for the Kingdom. But don't forget that in doing
it for the Kingdom, you're also doing it for America.
May God
bless our nation and her people despite their wicked ways. They
know not what they do.
